RUBRIC

To truly define an idea is difficult. It requires both concrete ideas and those that are more abstract. Definitions require examples and non examples. Your task is to choose an idea or concept like Amnesty or Morality and define it for your peers. You may choose a controversial topic or an obscure idea that is unknown by most. Your essay must consist of a claim (your unique definition), supporting ideas and examples, visual representations, and at least 1,000 words. You must research and cite at least 5 credible sources (images must also be cited properly) in text and on a Works Cited Page.

Consult your text book (Chapter 9 pp. 185) and model your argument of definition after the two well written examples in your text.

Step 1: Read Chapter 9. You cannot possibly write this essay without an understanding of the Argument of Definition.

After reading this chapter, read and review the two examples at the end of the chapter (beginning on page 206), as these examples should guide your work.

Step 2: Choose a controversial topic to define.

Step 3: Discussion Board #1: Arguments of Definition Due: 11/1 @ 9pm

What term/ topic are you defining? In 3-5 sentences, summarize your definition.

Choose at least 3 of your peers’ topics/ terms and define them in your own words, replying to their post.
Your definition will help them write their essay.

Step 4: Write an academic essay to define your topic. Include an original, creative title that represents your purpose.

A. Your title MUST represent your purpose.
B. Your title SHOULD NOT be a question.
C. Your title SHOULD NOT be just one word.
